In the last two weeks, a number of actors have asked me to suggest a monologue for Shakespeare auditions that no one else does. I don’t think it exists. Are some monologues used more often than others? Definitely. But these plays are so famous and there are so many companies performing them that it is difficult to find something that no one else does.
You can try cutting parts of a scene together to get something new. Sometimes this works but it is tricky. Does the speech make sense? Does it work in the cut version? Does it have a beginning that will grab the casting director or director’s attention? Choose what YOU respond to and then work on it so that you perform it better than everyone else.
